Umiak

UMIAK - Bermudian Ketch -

Umiak is the inuit name for a single-lined single-hull canoe of the most well-known kayak used by men for hunting and fishing. From the soft and generous shapes the umiak was the "women" boat, where the objects of the house and the children were carried, a quiet boat that faced the sea without challenging it, made to protect the most precious treasure: family. So even though Caesar Sangermani Jr tells another story about the origin of the name linked to "Norwegian" stern of the Bermuda ketch that came out of its yards in 1954, you can't avoid thinking that this beautiful 15-meter motorsailer has a bit of the deep soul of the ancient inuit canoe: femininity, gentleness, sense of protection, courage and taste, rather luxury, slowness.  “It's the stern the Umiak's true feature explains Cesare Sangermani jr, son of "that" Cesare Sangermani who was the designer and builder of exceptional wooden boats from the post-war period until the 1970's that marked the history of Italian quality Yachting: “A sharp stern, that of the "Umiak", almost like a bow, made especially for taking the sea well with loads without boarding and without the boat crossing. This “Ketch”, Sangermani tells us again,” was born as a motorsailer, a type of boat that at the time did not exist in the Mediterranean where there were those who were sailing and motor sailing and were careful about stretching canvas in the wind.  No one, in the 1950s, thought to use the sailboat for cruises or long motor transfers”. In the East Coast of the US, instead, the motorsailer was a reality in Florida, Keys, sailboats with powerful engines served as second home, "camper on the water", an idea that had taken hold in Northern Europe. From September 2008 to May 2009, Sangermani returned to his home on Entella, between Chiavari and Lavagna, where it was subjected to a restoration that brought it back to its original structure following Jack Laurent Giles' '54 project. The lively and dead work was brought back to wood and repainted, the same applies to all superstructures, including trunks and falchetts, trees and boom. The electrical and plumber system have been completely redone, equipped with air conditioning and heating Umiak does not give up on comfort or electronics and mounts the best on the market like gps, radar, autopilot. Inside the original subdivisions are preserved: on the bow a vip cabin and a single one served by the bathroom, a double on the stern with its own crew bath and two guard bunks in the square; the kitchen has been completely redesigned and the bathrooms renovated like all the upholstery and accessories.
